Founded in 1997 by Prof. Weigang Lin (CAS Outstanding Overseas Talent) and Prof. Jianzhong Yao, the Energy Conversion Research Group has been dedicated to thermochemical conversion of coal and biomass for over two decades. Past directors include Prof. Weigang Lin and Prof. Wenli Song. The group is currently led by Prof. Songgeng Li.
Today the group comprises over 40 members: 3 senior research professors, 15 associate and assistant researchers, and 20+ doctoral and master's students. More than 80 graduate students have completed their degrees and now work in universities, major enterprises, and research institutes.
Research areas: clean and efficient conversion of solid fuels; harmless disposal and resource recovery of municipal and industrial solid waste; pollutant formation mechanisms and control during fuel conversion; biomass pyrolysis oil utilization; analytical instrument development; chemical reactor design and engineering; catalytic chemistry and catalytic engineering.
The group operates experimental facilities worth over 30 million RMB, including a fundamental research laboratory (380 m2) at IPE-CAS Zhongguancun and a pilot-scale test facility (2,000 m2) at the Langfang division. Current projects include National Key R&D Programs, NSFC Key Projects, CAS major initiatives, and industry collaborations, with several technologies already transferred to application.
